Day 2 of 3
Rest
Reflection
Have you ever noticed that really resting is one of the hardest things to do? As if stopping were a weakness.
The Word
David probably wrote this psalm as an adult, remembering his days as a shepherd. He knew the dynamic well: a sheep doesn't lead itself to quiet waters. It has to be guided. David was not talking about theory. He was talking about experience.
"The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want."
"He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters."
"He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness for the sake of His name."
Psalm 23:1-3 (BSB)
Understanding
Notice the verb: "he makes me lie down." It doesn't say "he suggests rest to me" or "he gives me the option." He makes me lie down. Sometimes God has to lead us into rest because we won't go on our own.
Psalm 46:10 says something similar: "Be still, and know that I am God!" There is a direct connection between stopping and knowing God. While we are running, it's hard to hear his voice. While we are fighting to control everything, it's hard to feel his peace.
Resting is not doing nothing. It's trusting that God is taking care of things while you stop. It's accepting that you don't need to have all the answers today. The shepherd takes care. The waters are quiet. And your strength is restored.
What to do today
Before you go to sleep tonight, write down on a piece of paper three things you have been trying to control on your own. Then literally put that paper on your nightstand and say: "These three things stay with God tonight." Sleep without them.
Prayer
Lord, I admit that I have been fighting to keep everything under control. And I am exhausted. Today, I want to really rest. Lead me to quiet waters. Restore my strength. I trust that you are taking care of me while I stop. Amen.
