Today's Word

The joy of being free in Christ

When the Lord restored the fortunes ofZion,
we were like those who dreamed.
Our mouths were filled with laughter,
our tongues with songs of joy.
Then it was said among the nations,
“The Lord has done great things for them.”
The Lord has done great things for us,
and we are filled with joy.
- Psalm 126:1–3

Have you ever been locked in a place and unable to get out? Do you remember how you felt when someone finally set you free from that confinement? You hugged your rescuer and almost began jumping for joy because you had your freedom back, right?

The first three verses of Psalm 126 speak about the moment when God freed His people from captivity. They were finally free! What joy! They laughed without stopping, they sang cheerful songs, and even those watching them from afar recognized that God had done something great for His people. Everyone was incredibly happy!

Today I invite you to remember the freedom you have in Christ and celebrate it with joy, with songs and with laughter. Thanks to the work of Jesus in your life, you live in His light and have received the forgiveness of your sins. You no longer live under the weight of guilt or under the threat of eternal death. In Christ you are free, and you are already a participant in eternal life!

For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
- Colossians 1:13–14

So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
- John 8:36

The hand of God is upon you

Sometimes we can be surprised by bad news: earthquakes on one side, volcanoes on another, storms everywhere. We may feel that pressures come from all sides, not only in the physical realm but also in the spiritual realm. How good it is to know that the hand of God is always upon His people to take care of us and to help us!

God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their surging.
- Psalm 46:1–3

Never forget that, whatever happens, you can take refuge in God. Whether they are physical or emotional storms, you can turn to God for encouragement and strength. God will not only help you, but will also work in your life and situation.

If today is one of those days when you feel that you won’t be able to face all your problems, remember that the powerful and loving hand of God is upon you. He cares for you and walks with you today and every day. Rest in that!

You hem me in behind and before,
and you lay your hand upon me.
- Psalm 139:5

Rest in the Lord, enjoy His presence, and trust in His protection. He is faithful, He is with you, and He will not abandon you.

Day Before Yesterday's Word

Celebrate your freedom!

When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion,
we were like those who dreamed.
Our mouths were filled with laughter,
our tongues with songs of joy.
Then it was said among the nations,
“The Lord has done great things for them.”
The Lord has done great things for us,
and we are filled with joy.
- Psalm 126:1–3

Psalm 126 is a psalm of celebration and joy. The people of Israel had been in captivity in Babylon, but now they were free. God, in His infinite mercy, had delivered them and they were rejoicing.

Laughter, songs of joy, shouts proclaiming God's work: everyone around them noticed and acknowledged what God had done. The people’s joy testified that their deliverance was a miraculous act of God.

Do you celebrate what God has done and is doing for you? He has set you free from the power of sin, from eternal death, and from a life of oppression under the devil’s rule. Thanks to the redeeming power of Jesus on the cross, you now have the hope of forgiveness, eternal life, and the freedom to live outside the grip of the evil one. Is your life a song of celebration and gratitude to God?

Remember today all that God has done for you and celebrate with joy, with laughter, songs, and shouts, the work He has done in your life. Inspire others to say: “God has done great things in your life.”

For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
- Colossians 1:13–14

For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 1 Thessalonians 5:9
