Day 2 of 3

The Grace That Teaches

Reflection

Some people think grace means "God accepts everything I do." But the Bible shows that real grace doesn't leave us as we are: it changes us.

The Word

Paul wrote to Titus, a young leader caring for communities on the island of Crete. The local culture was morally permissive, and Paul wanted to show that God's grace is not a license to live any way you please:

"For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to everyone. It instructs us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live sensible, upright, and godly lives in the present age, as we await the blessed hope and glorious appearance of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ. He gave Himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds."

Titus 2:11-14 (BSB)

Understanding

Notice the verb Paul uses: grace "teaches us." It doesn't threaten, it doesn't punish, it doesn't manipulate. It teaches. Grace is a patient teacher who, day by day, shows how to live differently.

And what does it teach? Two things: what to leave behind (ungodliness and worldly passions) and what to embrace (a sensible, upright, godly life). Grace is not permission to do whatever you want. It is power to live the way you were created to live.

That is freeing because it removes guilt as the main motivation. You don't change out of fear of punishment. You change because you were loved first. Someone who really understands grace doesn't think "I can do whatever I want." They think "I don't want to live that way anymore, because I have experienced something better."

Grace also points to the future: "as we await the blessed hope." The Christian life is lived between two times: the grace that has already come and the glory that is still coming. In between, grace holds us up, trains us, and purifies us.

What to do today

Identify a habit or a behavior you know needs to change. Instead of pressuring yourself with guilt ("I should stop this"), say: "Grace, teach me to live differently in this area." Trade self-criticism for a request to be changed.

Prayer

Lord, thank you that your grace does not leave me where it found me. It teaches me, it changes me, it purifies me. I don't want to use grace as an excuse to stay where I am. Help me learn from it every day, leaving behind what harms me and embracing what brings me closer to you. Amen.
