Day 1 of 3
The Gift You Didn't Deserve
Reflection
If someone asked, "what is grace?", what would you say? Many Christians have heard that word hundreds of times, but few can explain why it changes everything.
The Word
Paul wrote to the Christians in Ephesus one of the clearest explanations in the whole Bible of what grace is and what it does. Before he talks about the solution, he describes the problem:
"And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you used to walk when you conformed to the ways of this world and of the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit who is now at work in the sons of disobedience. All of us also lived among them at one time, fulfilling the cravings of our flesh and indulging its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature children of wrath."
"But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in our trespasses. It is by grace you have been saved!"
"For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance as our way of life."
Ephesians 2:1-3, 4-5, 8-10 (BSB)
Understanding
Paul starts with a hard diagnosis: "you were dead." Not sick, not weak, not in need of a little help. Dead. A dead person can't save themselves. Can't make an effort. Can't deserve anything.
And that is exactly where grace comes in. "But God..." Those two words change everything. God acted when we couldn't act. He gave us life when we were dead. Not because we deserved it, but because he is rich in mercy.
That is what grace is: receiving what you did not deserve and could never earn. It is not a reward for good behavior. It is a gift that arrives before any effort of yours.
But Paul doesn't stop there. He says we were "created in Christ Jesus to do good works." Grace doesn't make us passive. It turns us into people who do good, not to earn salvation, but as a natural response to the love we have received.
The order matters: grace first, then works. Never the other way around.
What to do today
Take a piece of paper and write two lists: on the left, "Things I do to try to earn God's favor." On the right, "Things God has already done for me that I didn't deserve." See which list is longer and let that speak to your heart.
Prayer
Father, thank you for the "but God" in my story. I was dead and couldn't save myself. But you, rich in mercy, gave me life. Help me live today not trying to earn your love, but responding to the love I have already received. The grace is yours, and I accept it with gratitude. Amen.
