Jesus called us to be the salt of the earth — but what does that mean, and why is it so important? The Bible explains...

You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
- Matthew 5:13 (NKJV)

Jesus said this to His disciples. If you love Jesus and have given your life to Him, then you are also His disciple. That means you, too, are called to be the salt of the earth.

A little salt transforms an entire dish! In the same way, you are called to add “flavor” to the world around you. You can transform the lives of others by reflecting the love and power of Jesus. In everything you say and do, you can be a blessing!

You don't need many gifts or a large church behind you to make a difference. Just a pinch of salt is enough to completely change the flavor of food. Even the smallest actions that reflect Jesus can make a big impact.

If Salt Loses Its Flavor, It’s No Longer Useful

Jesus also gave a warning: if the salt loses its flavor, it becomes useless. There’s no point in calling yourself a Christian if that doesn’t show in how you live. Those who believe in Jesus live differently.

Faith is not passive: it calls for action. God doesn’t require huge heroic acts, but He does want you to live for Him, obeying His commandments. A life dedicated to Jesus will make a difference, because people will see how Jesus transforms lives. If you're a Christian, it should be visible in the way you act and interact with others.

Being salt isn’t an impossible task, but it is very necessary. The way you live can transform many other lives!

Be the Salt: Live for Jesus.
