Today's Word
Let suffering draw you closer to God
As the deer pants for streams of water,
so my soul pants for you, my God.
- Psalm 42:1
When reading Psalm 42, we notice that its author was exiled among a hostile people who mocked his faith in God. It is clear that he was suffering physically, emotionally, and spiritually. His soul was distressed, but even in the midst of that difficult situation, he chose to continue trusting in God.
His affirmations of faith help us see that, in the midst of all the agonizing suffering he experienced, he chose to seek God’s presence, draw near to Him, and trust in His power and goodness. He expressed his feelings before God with sincerity and, at the same time, affirmed his hope that God would act.
Why, my soul, are you downcast?
Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
my Savior and my God.
My soul is downcast within me;
therefore I will remember you
from the land of the Jordan,
the heights of Hermon—from Mount Mizar.
- Psalm 42:5–6
It is not easy to have this attitude. Many times, when difficult moments of suffering and trials come, we forget that in God we have the source of hope. God’s power does not end when trials and pain come. On the contrary. God remains on His throne, strong, faithful, and ready to work on our behalf.
It is true that sometimes God does not act as quickly or in the way we would like, but He does not abandon us in the midst of pain. Choose to draw near to God, bringing your suffering to Him with the confidence that He is your salvation and your God forever. Praise God and trust Him.

Do you have faith?
When the sun sets at night, do you doubt that it will rise again in the morning? No! You simply believe it will come out, even though you cannot yet see it. That is faith!
Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.
- Hebrews 11:1
We can have the same faith in God because He never fails. Even when we cannot see Him, we can believe that God will not abandon us.
The Bible says that a little faith in God goes a long way. Whoever truly believes can move mountains. To see God’s miracles, you just need to believe and act.
On one occasion, a man brought his demon-possessed son to Jesus’ disciples to be healed, but they could not do it. The man then went to Jesus, knelt before Him, and begged Him to have mercy and heal his son. Jesus healed him immediately.
Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”
He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”
- Matthew 17:19–20
And you, do you have faith? Ask God today to increase your faith and help you live fully confident in His love and power. Do you have a need? Bring it to God in prayer and have faith, because He will act.

Day Before Yesterday's Word
Strangers and pilgrims on the earth
All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth.
- Hebrews 11:13
Hebrews chapter 11 is known as the chapter of the heroes of faith. There we find a summary of the story of great men and women who remained steadfast in faith despite all the obstacles life placed before them.
Verse 13 gives us a good key to understanding their perseverance. They knew they were passing through life, that their true citizenship was heavenly. They did not live focused on what was earthly and temporary, but sought to obey God in everything, even when doing so brought them trouble.
We were created for eternity with God. We are just passing through this earth; our true destiny is to live with God forever. Therefore, the difficulties of life lose their power over us: our gaze is fixed on the Lord and on the eternal victory He has already won for us.
Our identity is in God. The world may reject us, persecute us, or turn its back on us, but if we know who we are in Christ, we will remain firm and strong without giving up. Establish yourself today in the Lord, as a member of His family for all eternity.
Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household.
- Ephesians 2:19
