Don't Despair! God Wants to Turn Your Sorrow into Joy

There are many things in life that can steal our joy. They may be worries, disappointments, or even certain people. When joy runs dry, it can feel as though we have lost our strength.

God loves you. He wants to see you joyful, and no one cares more about your happiness than He does. When you surrender your life to the Lord, joy begins to flourish and overflow to those around you.

You turned my wailing into dancing;
you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy
- Psalm 30:11

Although our problems do not disappear, having God in our hearts changes our perspective and helps us see things through His eyes. No one enjoys suffering, but we know that in God, suffering has both a purpose and an end. In the midst of sorrow and hardship, God is with us, comforting and strengthening us.

Throughout the Bible, we find precious promises that encourage us and restore joy to our hearts. One of those promises is the peace of God. We can experience that peace even in the middle of life's troubles because Jesus has already overcome the world.

I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.
- John 16:33

Bring your sorrows and burdens before God and allow Him to renew the joy in your heart. God is faithful. He is by your side, helping you and giving you strength. Rejoice in Him.

The Lord is my strength and my shield;
my heart trusts in him, and he helps me.
My heart leaps for joy,
and with my song I praise him.
- Psalm 28:7

How Well Do You Know God?

Psalm 86 is a remarkable psalm from which we can learn much. David, the psalmist, was going through a difficult time. He was distressed because he felt threatened and persecuted by arrogant and violent people.

In humility, David came before God in prayer. He presented his requests to the Lord, but he did so while expressing his need and acknowledging God's character. David knew God well. He knew that God would not fail him in times of need, and he approached the Father with complete confidence.

Based on his experience with God, David declared that he could expect God's intervention because the Lord had already worked in many situations throughout his life. Several verses in this psalm reveal just how well David knew God:

You, Lord, are forgiving and good,
abounding in love to all who call to you.
- Psalm 86:5

David had experienced God's goodness, forgiveness, and love. He came before God knowing that once again he would receive evidence of the Lord's loving care.

When I am in distress, I call to you,
because you answer me.
- Psalm 86:7

God had answered David on many previous occasions. He knew that God would not ignore his prayer and trusted that the Lord would respond in the midst of his new distress.

For you are great and do marvelous deeds;
you alone are God.
- Psalm 86:10

David trusted in the greatness and power of God, the one true God, and remained steadfast in that truth.

For great is your love toward me;
you have delivered me from the depths,
from the realm of the dead.
- Psalm 86:13

God had rescued David from death on other occasions, for example, by giving him victory over Goliath. David trusted in God's love and protective care.

David's confidence was not based on wishful thinking but on a personal history with God. He remembered what God had done in the past and trusted Him for the present.

How well do you know God? Have you experienced His intervention in the circumstances of your life? God is always faithful. Choose to trust Him!
