Today's Word

In Sickness and in Health, God Is with You!

On good days, when you feel well and everything is going right, God is with you. On bad days, when you're sick, sad, and lacking motivation, God is still with you. Being a Christian doesn't mean you'll never face illness or hardship, but it does mean you'll never face them alone.

God is always present in your life!

The Lord is always by your side even when you don't see it, He is working. He loves you and will never forsake you. All you need to do is hold on to His promises. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and remember: by His stripes you are healed.

The Lord sustains them on their sickbed
and restores them from their bed of illness.
- Psalm 41:3

Even if your current situation is overwhelming and you feel powerless, don't let it shake your faith. Stand firm as you are in the shadow of the Almighty, He will fill you with strength and get you through it all. He is with you.

My flesh and my heart may fail,
but God is the strength of my heart
and my portion forever.
- Psalm 73:26

Standing firm

He will not let your foot slip—
he who watches over you will not slumber;
- Psalm 121:3

Whoever loves God and seeks to do His will can count on His help. Even when temptations come or when doubts trouble your heart, the Lord will support you and keep your feet firm on the Rock, which is Christ. Day and night, His eyes and His care are upon you. Hold on to God today. Do not ignore His presence or the arm that sustains you. He loves you, He cares for you, and He will not let your foot slip.

If you feel like you cannot go on or that your battles are too great, do what the psalmist did:

I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.
- Psalm 121:1–2

Lift your eyes in prayer and ask God to help you. Remember the times when you saw God working in your life, when He helped you in the middle of struggles and difficulties.

Remember that God never abandons you. He is by your side, watching over you, paying attention to everything that happens in your life, and He will continue to be with you forever. Trust in His care.

The Lord will keep you from all harm—
he will watch over your life;
the Lord will watch over your coming and going
both now and forevermore.
- Psalm 121:7–8

Day Before Yesterday's Word

Meaningless requests

Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. “Teacher,” they said, “we want you to do for us whatever we ask.” “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked. They replied, “Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.” “You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesus said.
- Mark 10:35–38a

On one occasion, after Jesus announced that his death was approaching, two of his disciples came to him with a request. James and John wanted to be seated in heaven one at Jesus’ right and the other at his left. That sounds like a good thing, right? Being close to Jesus for all eternity seems like a worthy goal.

But Jesus knew their hearts and recognized that what they truly sought was prestige or to stand out among the other disciples. Jesus went on to explain what would actually be good for them, the request they should be making. He spoke about rulers and the power they exercise over people, and added:

Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
- Mark 10:43–45

In other words, what they really needed was to become more like Jesus, humble and with hearts ready to serve.

The same is true for us. We often pray: “Give me this or that, grant me what I want so I look good in front of others.” But the main request of our heart should be: “Lord, my God, help me become more like Jesus. Help me be humble and serve you and others with love.”

Are we willing to pray like that? May God help us!
