Today's Word

Called to go against the tide

But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
- Luke 6:35–36

One of the most difficult areas for followers of Jesus is to love our enemies and do good to those who have wronged us. We are human beings like everyone else, and our inner self cries out for vengeance, for justice, to show once and for all that we can defend ourselves.

However, Jesus was very clear in His words and in His example. We are called to love our enemies, to treat well those who have harmed us, to be kind to those who have despised us. A complicated task! Our emotions want to take control, but that’s when we must remember that God said:

Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”says the Lord.
- Romans 12:19

So, when you feel the urge to return evil for evil, to respond to insults and contempt, choose to be like Jesus and go against the current. Pray for those who have hurt you and, if possible, be kind and gracious. In due time, God will bring justice.

Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”says the Lord.
- Romans 12:17-19

Live in Constant Joy!

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!
- Philippians 4:4

Being happy can vary greatly depending on the situations we face in our lives. Therefore, it may seem very difficult to live out this verse. With so much stress, hardship, and problems that arise in our daily lives, how can we be as joyful as the apostle Paul says?

However, the joy referred to in the letter to the Philippians is not based on what happens to us day by day, but on what Jesus has done for all of us. Rejoice in the sacrifice of Jesus, something that has no expiration date. What Jesus did for humanity is valid for you today and will continue to be valid forever.

The salvation from eternal condemnation, together with the merciful presence of the Lord Jesus sustaining us every day, should fill our hearts with joy. This joy from salvation, which surpasses all understanding, should nourish us daily!

Rejoice in the reality that you are saved and have eternal life in Christ. Jesus has set you free from living under punishment and has opened the door to eternal happiness.

Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.
- John 3:36

For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.
- John 6:40

Day Before Yesterday's Word

Maranatha! Come, Lord Jesus!

He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon.”
Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.
- Revelation 22:20

Jesus promised that He would return for His people so that we may dwell with Him for all eternity. Do you long for His return? Do you pray for the fulfillment of the promise of the Lord’s second coming?

Sometimes we look around and feel overwhelmed, wars, hunger, droughts, corruption… We may despair if we focus our eyes on the current state of the world. Look to Jesus! Fix your eyes on Him! Remember His promises. He will return, and if you have received Him as the Lord and Savior of your life, you will be with Him forever. The Bible says this clearly:

But in those days, following that distress,
‘the sun will be darkened,
and the moon will not give its light;
the stars will fall from the sky,
and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’
At that time people will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens.
- Mark 13:24–27

No matter how difficult things are today, the suffering will end for the children of God. The day will come when Jesus will return and take us to live with Him forever.

Take a moment today to thank the Lord for His presence amid life’s hardships. Thank Him that you have the hope of eternal life with Him. Pray for His return. Dare to tell Him from the depths of your heart: Maranatha! Come, Lord Jesus!
