Abishag, a young Shunammite woman from the town of Shunem, was chosen to care for King David in his old age, serving him with dedication during his final days. After David’s death, she became part of the conflict over the throne between Adonijah and Solomon. Her story, told in 1 Kings, is connected to the succession of the kingdom of Israel.
In his old age, David could no longer keep warm, so his servants suggested that a young woman be found to care for him and lie beside him. Abishag was chosen for this task. She became a faithful companion and cared for the king in his final days, but the Bible makes it clear that they had no intimate relationship.
Abishag’s Role in the Struggle for Israel’s Throne
Abishag played an important role in the dispute for the throne of Israel. After King David died, his son Adonijah—who had already attempted to become king—asked for permission to marry Abishag. This request was made to King Solomon, Adonijah’s brother.

In 1 Kings 1:4, it says: “The young woman was very beautiful; she took care of the king and waited on him, but the king did not have relations with her.”
