The vision of the valley of dry bones

Ezekiel was a Jewish prophet living in Babylon. One day, he had a vision in which God took him to a valley full of very dry bones. Then God asked him if those bones could come back to life. Ezekiel didn't know the answer, but God commanded him to prophesy life over the bones.

4 Then he said to me, “Prophesy to these bones and say to them, ‘Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord! 5 This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life. 6 I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord.’”

Ezekiel 37:4-6

Obediently Ezekiel prophesied about the bones and an incredible thing happened... The bones came together, along with muscles, tendons, and skin, all of it miraculously reappeared! It was no longer just a pile of bones. They were human bodies, whole and restored.

There was just one problem: they weren't alive. So God sent Ezekiel to prophesy over them again. Ezekiel obeyed and the bodies received spirit and became alive. Now, in front of him, there was a great army standing! The impossible had happened. The miracle was complete.

The dry bones - the nation of Israel

God explained to Ezekiel that the dry bones represented the nation of Israel. After many years of disobedience, God punished the Israelites by delivering them into the hands of their enemies. The city of Jerusalem had been razed to the ground, the temple was in ruins and the people had been deported to Babylon.

All this was the fruit of sin. The people of Israel had abandoned God to follow false gods and had devoted themselves to doing things that were wrong. Since they didn't repent or change their ways, they received the punishment they deserved. Now, faced with devastation, they recognized their mistakes but lost hope. Slavery was their new reality and they felt dead, like dry bones. It was the end.

The promise of restoration

However, the vision God gave Ezekiel was a message of hope. The Israelites had sinned, but now they had repented and turned their hearts to God. And God had compassion for his people.

The Israelites' hope had dried up, but God showed that he had the power to bring them back to life. He promised to restore the people of Israel with his Spirit and lead them back to their land. Death and devastation would be transformed into life and blessing!

The Valley of Dry Bones: a Bible Study on Hope

Hope when all seems lost

Sometimes we find ourselves in similar situations. Hopeless, because of our sins, or because of life's circumstances. At such times, it seems that the only thing we can do is give up and die because there is no other way out. But God offers us hope.

God makes the impossible happen! When we repent of our sins and turn to Him, believing that Jesus is our Savior, God gives us new hope. He has the power to restore us and turn the curse into a blessing, death into life. It's not always immediate (the Israelites had to wait many years for the prophecy to be fulfilled), but God is always faithful.

Put your hope in God and see how He will restore you!
