Obed-Edom was a Levitical priest who hosted the Ark of the Covenant in his home for three months after Uzzah died for touching it improperly. Instead of being punished, he and his household were blessed. His story teaches that the presence of God brings blessings to those who receive it with reverence and obedience.
The story of Obed-Edom is found in 2 Samuel 6 and 1 Chronicles 13. At the time, King David wanted to bring the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem. The Ark was a sacred chest made of acacia wood and overlaid with gold, symbolizing God's presence among the people of Israel. It contained the tablets of the Law, the manna, and Aaron’s staff. It was to be carried by the Levites and handled with reverence, according to God’s instructions.
David, instead of following God's instructions on how to transport the Ark—by having it carried by the priests—placed it on an ox cart. During the journey, the oxen stumbled, and Uzzah, the son of Abinadab, reached out to steady the Ark. For disobeying the sacred instructions, he was struck dead by God.
Afraid, David halted the journey and left the Ark at the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite, who received it with reverence. Unlike the house of Abinadab, where the Ark had stayed for years with no recorded blessings, the presence of God brought prosperity to Obed-Edom’s household in just three months. Seeing this, David resumed the journey—this time following the proper instructions.
Obed-Edom became a gatekeeper and musician in the temple, serving the Lord with dedication. He and his descendants were honored for their service to God, showing his faithfulness and commitment.

When David tried to bring it back to Jerusalem, an accident occurred: Uzzah touched the Ark to steady it and was struck dead by God for his irreverence. Fearing God’s wrath, David left the Ark at the house of Obed-Edom, a Levite from Gath.

Difference Between the House of Abinadab and the House of Obed-Edom

The Ark was taken to the house of Abinadab after being recovered from the Philistines, and it remained there for twenty years (1 Samuel 7:1–2). During this period, there are no records of great blessings being poured out upon Abinadab’s house, which may indicate a lack of reverence and obedience in the treatment of the Ark. Abinadab was not a Levite, only his son Eleazar.
After the death of Uzzah, who touched the Ark improperly, the Ark was taken to the house of the Levite Obed-Edom. He received it with great respect, reverence, and God abundantly blessed his house during the three months in which the Ark stayed under his responsibility (1 Chronicles 13:14). What Was Obed-Edom’s Life Like Before the Ark?
The Bible does not provide many details about the life of Obed-Edom before the arrival of the Ark of the Covenant in his house.
Obed-Edom was a Gittite, that is, originally from Gath, a Philistine city. He probably had already converted to the God of Israel, like many others from his city, and began to serve the Lord.
Before receiving the Ark, his life may have been ordinary, but after the arrival of the Ark, he experienced a great change in his life, being abundantly blessed by the presence of God in his house (2 Samuel 6:11).
