Joshua was a significant leader in Israel's history, loyal to Moses during the desert wanderings and courageous in the conquest of the Promised Land. A Man Who Heard the Voice of God
Throughout his life, God spoke to Joshua directly, just as He spoke to Moses. Joshua listened to God's words and believed in them. Whatever God commanded, Joshua did. This was the secret of his success.
Joshua's power did not come from himself. All the miracles and victories he witnessed were the result of believing in and following God. The only time Joshua did not consult God, he was deceived by the people of Gibeon.
How often do we forget to seek God's guidance? Or how often are we not paying attention when God speaks? Or do we fail to obey God? Yet, the people who witness miracles are those who hear, believe, and obey God.
Jericho: An Unlikely Victory
The first major challenge of Joshua's leadership was the conquest of Jericho. The city's walls were renowned for being nearly impregnable! The city was completely shut, ready to repel any attack. A siege could last for months...
God told Joshua what he should do: march with the entire army around the city for 7 days. The command seemed strange, but Joshua did everything God commanded. On the seventh day, after circling the city 7 times, the Israelites shouted, and the walls fell! The victory over Jericho was complete.
God’s plans are often different from ours. He uses unlikely methods to save us and demonstrate His power. God is very creative! But we need to be ready to obey, even when His plan seems strange.
A Courage That Came from God
In Jericho, Joshua risked his entire credibility. Imagine how he must have felt during that week, marching around the city without seeing a single crack in the wall. Would it work? Would God really bring the walls down on the last day? Could it all have been a big mistake?
Joshua certainly knew that if the walls did not fall, it would mean the end of his leadership. The people would become discouraged, the enemies would gain courage to attack, and he could even be killed by the disillusioned Israelites! But God had told him to be courageous because He would never forsake him. Joshua held on to that message and was filled with courage.
How far are we willing to risk? What voice will we listen to: the voice of God or the voice of fear? It is not just the first step that requires courage; the second, third, and all steps before victory are challenging. But if God has promised, He will fulfill it. We cannot give up!
