Explanation of 7 well-known miracles of Jesus:

1. Turning Water into Wine

Biblical text: John 2:1-11

This was Jesus' first miracle. He, His mother, and His disciples were invited to a wedding in Cana of Galilee. Suddenly, the wine ran out, which created an awkward and embarrassing situation for the newlyweds.

Mary, the mother of Jesus, went to him and simply said, "They have no wine" (John 2:3). Jesus replied something that sounds a bit curt in English, but in His language, it showed respect. He said to Mary, "Woman, what does that have to do with me? My hour has not yet come." (John 2:4). However, just as she expected, Jesus acted.

5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.[a]

7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.

8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”

They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”

- John 2:5-10

Jesus turned the water into wine of the highest quality, and the bridegroom was praised. His wedding was not remembered as the one where the wine ran out early. No! It was remembered as the wedding where the best wine was served at the end. Thanks to Jesus' intervention, what could have been a source of great shame turned into a reason for joy and pride.

Why did Jesus perform this miracle? It could be said that perhaps it was to please His mother or to spare the bride and groom from embarrassment. The truth is that the Bible says it was to reveal His glory: the power of God was manifested through Him.

What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which He revealed his glory; and His disciples believed in Him.

- John 2:11

2. Feeding the 5000

Biblical Text: Matthew 14:13-21; Mark 6:31-44; Luke 9:10-17; John 6:5-14

Jesus had just received the news of the death of John the Baptist, His cousin. He withdrew by boat to be alone, but the crowds found out where He was going and followed Him.

When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.

- Matthew 14:14

The heart of Jesus was full of compassion. He set aside His own grief to immediately begin ministering to the people who had come. As evening approached, His disciples suggested He send the people away to buy food. Jesus replied, "They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat." (Matthew 14:16). But feeding five thousand men (besides the women and children) was no easy task.

The disciples told Jesus that they only had five loaves of bread and two fish, perhaps trying to reason with Him. Jesus' response? "Bring them here to me." (Matthew 14:18). Jesus was unfazed. He trusted in the immense power of God, knowing there would be more than enough - and so it was.

19 And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. 20 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 21 The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.

- Matthew 14:19-21

Everyone ate and there were even twelve baskets of food left over! That day, Jesus fed both the body and the spirit of all those people. They all witnessed the compassion and power of God in action through His Son, Jesus.

3. Walking on Water

Biblical Text: Matthew 14:22-33; Mark 6:45-52; John 6:15-21

After feeding over 5000 people, Jesus stayed behind to dismiss the crowd and sent His disciples ahead by boat to the other side. After the crowd left, Jesus went up on a mountainside to pray alone. He prayed until the early hours, and then decided to join His disciples in the boat. The boat was already far from land, but this was no problem for Jesus. He walked on the water and reached the boat.

26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. 27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

- Matthew 14:26-27

Peter, with his bold temperament, said, "Lord, if it’s you, tell me to come to you on the water." (Matthew 14:28). And so Jesus said, "Come." At first, everything was fine. Peter got out of the boat and walked toward Jesus. But the wind grew stronger, and Peter became afraid and started to sink.

30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”

31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”

32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

- Matthew 14:30-33

As we can see, this miracle caused those who witnessed it to worship Jesus and acknowledge that He was indeed the Son of God.

4. Healing of the 10 Lepers

Biblical Text: Luke 17:11-19

Jesus was on His way to Jerusalem, traveling through Samaria and Galilee. Along the way, He encountered ten lepers. They called out to Jesus from a distance (since they were forbidden by law to approach healthy people):

..and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!”

- Luke 17:13

They knew who Jesus was and took the opportunity to ask for His help. Jesus simply told them, "Go and show yourselves to the priests." (Luke 17:14). He didn’t promise them anything, nor did He say anything more, but they obeyed. As they went on their way, all ten were healed. Their bodies were completely cleansed, with no trace of leprosy.

15 One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. 16 He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan.

17 Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? 18 Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?” 19 Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.”

- Luke 17:15-19

Though ten men were healed, only one returned to praise God and give thanks. That act of worship and acknowledgment of God’s power in Jesus was enough for him to receive a greater gift: salvation. He, a Samaritan, also received the healing of his soul that day because he recognized Jesus' lordship.

5. The Resurrection of Lazarus

Biblical Text: John 11:1-46

Martha, Mary, and Lazarus were three siblings and dear friends of Jesus. When He went to Bethany, the town where they lived, He often visited them and sometimes stayed with them. One day, the sisters sent word to Jesus that Lazarus was very sick. When Jesus received the message, He said:

When He heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.”

- John 11:4

Jesus stayed where He was for two more days before going to Bethany to see Lazarus. The disciples didn’t want to go back to Judea because they feared harm, since the Jews had tried to stone Jesus. Still, they went with Him.

When they arrived, they found that Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days. Along the way, Jesus met Martha, and they had the following conversation:

21 “Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.”

23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”

24 Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”

25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

- John 11:21-26

Of course, Martha believed! She was certain that in Christ, they had eternal life. Martha went to tell Mary that Jesus was near, and Mary came to meet Him. Jesus had a conversation with her similar to the one with Martha, but He was deeply moved when He saw Mary weeping and asked where they had laid Lazarus.

Jesus wept (John 11:35) and went with them to the tomb. When He arrived, He ordered the stone to be removed.

41 So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.”

43 When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face.

Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”

- John 11:41-44

Just as Jesus had said, the sickness did not end in death but in resurrection. Jesus, the Son of God, was glorified! And it became a day of salvation for many. Verse 45 says: "Many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, believed in Him."

6. He Healed the Centurion’s Servant from a Distance

Biblical Text: Matthew 8:5-13; Luke 7:1-10

A centurion who lived in Capernaum had a servant whom he valued greatly, but the servant was paralyzed. The centurion had heard of Jesus and decided to ask for His help. His request? The healing of his servant.

However, the centurion didn’t feel worthy for Jesus to enter his house, and he said so:

“Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. 9 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” 10 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.

- Matthew 8:8-10

Jesus granted his request, and at that very moment, the servant was healed (Matthew 8:13).

7. Healing and Deliverance of a Demon-Possessed Boy

Biblical Text: Matthew 17:14-21; Mark 9:14-29; Luke 9:37-43

A man was desperate because a demonic spirit would seize his son, causing him to have seizures. The man came to Jesus and begged Him on his knees to act and heal his son. He had already asked Jesus' disciples for help, but they could not drive the demon out.

Jesus told him to bring his son, and so the father did.

Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed at that moment.

- Matthew 17:18

In Luke 9:43 we read, "Everyone was amazed at the greatness of God." Once again, the power of God manifested through Jesus touched not only the boy and his father, but also others who witnessed the miracle.

8. Healing of Many Sick and Demon-Possessed at Sunset

Bible Text: Matthew 8:16-17; Mark 1:32-34; Luke 4:40-41

One evening, Jesus healed many people suffering from various diseases and cast out numerous demons from those who were possessed.

16 When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. 17 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:

“He took up our infirmities
and bore our diseases.

- Matthew 8:16-17

9. Jesus Heals a Mute Man

Bible Text: Matthew 9:32-34

A demon-possessed man who was unable to speak was brought to Jesus. Jesus cast out the evil spirit, and the man immediately began to speak normally.

32 While they were going out, a man who was demon-possessed and could not talk was brought to Jesus. 33 And when the demon was driven out, the man who had been mute spoke. The crowd was amazed and said, “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.”

34 But the Pharisees said, “It is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons.”

- Matthew 9:32-34

10. The Transfiguration of Jesus

Bible Text: Matthew 17:1-8; Mark 9:2-8; Luke 9:28-36

Jesus revealed His glorious nature and divine splendor on top of a mountain. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as bright as light. Moses and Elijah appeared, speaking with Him, and the voice of God the Father came directly from heaven.

After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2 There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. 3 Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.

4 Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.”

5 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!”

6 When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. 7 But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.” 8 When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.

- Matthew 17:1-8

11. The Ascension of Jesus into Heaven

Bible Text: Luke 24:50-52; Acts 1:6-11

This was another extraordinary miracle. After Jesus’ resurrection, He gave final instructions and blessings to His disciples before being supernaturally taken up into heaven.

50 When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. 51 While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. 52 Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy.

- Luke 24:50-52

6 Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”

7 He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

9 After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.

10 They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. 11 “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”

- Acts 1:6-11

Other Miracles of Jesus

In the Bible, 36 miracles performed by Jesus are recorded. However, as John explained in his Gospel, Jesus performed many other miracles and signs.

30 Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

- John 20:30-31

The Miracle of the Resurrection

After He was crucified, Jesus rose from the dead. He did not stay dead but resurrected on the third day. We can read the account of Jesus' resurrection in Matthew 28:1-10, Mark 16:1-7, Luke 24:1-11, and John 20:1-7.

The Bible also tells us that, after His resurrection, Jesus appeared to Mary (John 20:15-17), to Peter (Luke 24:33-34), to His disciples (Luke 24:36-48), and to many other people (1 Corinthians 15:6). Jesus lives, and one day He will return! (Acts 1:10-11).
