We read about the 7 trumpets in the last book of the Bible - Revelation, chapters 8 to 11. These trumpets announce the beginning of God's judgment upon the human race. With the sound of these trumpets, a period of great tribulation will begin, worse sorrows than what has ever been seen in the history of humanity.

What are the 7 trumpets mentioned in the Bible?

The 7 trumpets are part of the apostle John's vision of the future, and that's why we know it is something that will happen at the end of times. John saw 7 angels who were standing before God, to whom 7 trumpets were given to blow. Here is a summary of what John saw happened when each trumpet sounded.

1st Trumpet: Hail and fire mixed with blood thrown upon the earth

The first angel sounded his trumpet, and there came hail and fire mixed with blood, and it was hurled down on the earth. A third of the earth was burned up, a third of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass was burned up.

- Revelation 8:7

As we read in Revelation 8:7, when the first trumpet sounded, hail and fire mixed with blood occurred. This mixture fell upon the earth and caused great devastation. A third of the earth was burned, as well as a third of the trees and all the green grass.

2nd Trumpet: A great mountain burning with fire thrown into the sea

8 The second angel sounded his trumpet, and something like a huge mountain, all ablaze, was thrown into the sea. A third of the sea turned into blood, 9 a third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.

- Revelation 8:8-9

When the second angel blew his trumpet, something like a huge mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea. A third of the sea turned to blood, and this caused the death of a third of the living creatures that were in the sea. Another result was that a third of the ships was destroyed.

3rd Trumpet: The great star falling from the sky

10 The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water— 11 the name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters turned bitter, and many people died from the waters that had become bitter.

- Revelation 8:10-11

In Revelation 8:10-11, we are told that when the third trumpet sounded, a huge star called Wormwood fell from the sky. The star was burning like a torch. Its fall affected the fresh water supplies: a third of the rivers and the springs of water.

A third of the waters became bitter like wormwood, and many men died because of those bitter waters.

4th Trumpet: Darkening of a third of the sun, the moon, and the stars

As I watched, I heard an eagle that was flying in midair call out in a loud voice: “Woe! Woe! Woe to the inhabitants of the earth, because of the trumpet blasts about to be sounded by the other three angels!”

- Revelation 8:13

The sound of the fourth trumpet brought darkness upon the earth. A third of the sun, the moon, and the stars darkened, and therefore, their brightness was dimmed. Less light and less heat upon the earth.

In verse 13 of Revelation 8, we are told that after the fourth trumpet, the announcement of "the 3 woes" was made. The worst was still to come.

5th Trumpet: First woe - 5 months tormented by locusts like scorpions

The fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth. The star was given the key to the shaft of the Abyss. 2 When he opened the Abyss, smoke rose from it like the smoke from a gigantic furnace. The sun and sky were darkened by the smoke from the Abyss. 3 And out of the smoke locusts came down on the earth and were given power like that of scorpions of the earth.

- Revelation 9:1-3

In Revelation 9:1-11, the fifth trumpet is described with the first woe. From the bottomless pit, from the depths of the earth, hot smoke rose, darkening the sun and the air. From that smoke came locusts like scorpions with the task of torturing the human beings who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads.

They would not harm anyone else or anything else, only those who did not have the seal of God, and they would torment them for 5 months. The men would not die, only suffer tremendously due to the torment caused by the scorpions' stings.

6th Trumpet: Second woe - Release of 4 evil angels to kill a third of mankind

13 The sixth angel sounded his trumpet, and I heard a voice coming from the four horns of the golden altar that is before God. 14 It said to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.”

- Revelation 9:13-14

When the sixth angel blew his trumpet, 4 evil angels were released, ready to kill a third of the population. The account is found in Revelation 9:12-21. These angels led a great army of horse soldiers. What was their mission? To kill a third of humanity with fire, smoke, and sulfur coming out of the horses' mouths.

It is sad to see that the prophecy ensures that those who survived did not repent or stop worshiping their idols. They continued full of wickedness, living their sinful lives.

7th Trumpet: Third woe - The announcement of the coming of Christ's kingdom and judgment

15 The seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, which said:

“The kingdom of the world has become
the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah,
and he will reign for ever and ever.”

16 And the twenty-four elders, who were seated on their thrones before God, fell on their faces and worshiped God, 17 saying:

“We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty,
the One who is and who was,
because you have taken your great power
and have begun to reign.

- Revelation 11:15-17

Finally, in Revelation 11:15-19, we are told about the seventh trumpet and the third woe. At the sound of the trumpet, the twenty-four elders fell down and worshiped God.

With that final trumpet, the coming of Christ's kingdom to the world and the judgment of human beings is announced. As those verses say, God will judge all the dead and give His reward to the prophets and saints who feared His name. He will also destroy those who destroy the earth.

The sound of that trumpet announces the imminent closeness of the end of the earth as we know it and the beginning of God's eternal kingdom. That announcement caused great commotion in heaven and on earth:

Then God’s temple in heaven was opened, and within his temple was seen the ark of his covenant. And there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, an earthquake and a severe hailstorm.

- Revelation 11:19

That is the prelude to the beginning of God's final judgments.
