One of the most famous episodes of Jesus' life is when He calms the storm. In this story, we can learn that by having faith, we can face any obstacle and overcome the storms that arise in our lives.

Text: Mark 4:35-41

Objective: To lead the listeners to seek a consistent knowledge of the life and work of Jesus, so they can face the storms of life with maturity.

Theme: How to face the storms of life with maturity.

Introduction:

1. The Backstory:

  • Jesus calls the disciples to cross the Sea of Galilee:

That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.”

- Mark 4:35

  • The disciples promptly obey Jesus: Mark 4:36
  • According to the account in the Gospel of Matthew, the disciples followed Jesus:

Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him.

- Matthew 8:23

  • The following text says that a great storm arose:

A furious squall came up

- Mark 4:37a

2. Contextualization:

  • The fact that we follow Jesus does not exempt us from facing storms in this life.

3. Interpretation:

  • The disciples react desperately and are rebuked by Jesus:

He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

- Mark 4:40

  • The disciples reacted this way because they had an inconsistent understanding of who Jesus was and what His mission was.
  • The disciples' question after the miracle reveals this reality:

They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

- Mark 4:41

4. Application:

  • We need to have a consistent understanding of the life and work of Jesus so that we can face the storms of life with maturity.

5. Main Statement:

  • When we have a consistent understanding of the life and work of the Lord Jesus, we become capable of facing the obstacles that arise in the storms of our lives with maturity.

6. Transition Sentence:

  • There are two obstacles that typically arise when a storm comes into our lives: fear and anxiety.
  • Based on the event described in Mark 4:35-41, we will analyze the conditions for overcoming fear and overcoming anxiety:

I. To overcome fear, we need to have faith grounded in a clear understanding of Jesus' identity.

1. Fear and unbelief always go hand in hand:

He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

- Mark 4:40

2. Let’s analyze the circumstances:

  • The disciples were, for the most part, experienced fishermen who knew that place and life on the sea.
  • Since they believed they could die, we can affirm that the storm was impressive and frightening.
  • That’s why they woke Jesus up in an accusatory way:

The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”

- Mark 4:38b

  • In the face of Jesus’ power, they ask:

“Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

- Mark 4:41b

3. The disciples' unbelief was related to their weak understanding of who Jesus was.

4. We need to truly know who Jesus is.

5. This knowledge will enable us to overcome fear.

II. To overcome anxiety, we need to learn to rest in God by having a clear understanding of our identity in Jesus.

1. Anxiety prevents us from resting.

2. Let’s analyze the situation:

  • The wind and the waves were crashing against the boat.
  • The boat was already filling with water:

...and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped.

- Mark 4:37

  • Jesus was at the back of the boat, sleeping on a pillow in the middle of the storm:

Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion....

- Mark 4:38a

3. Jesus was able to sleep in the midst of the storm because He had a clear perception of Himself (His identity).

4. This self-awareness allowed Him to clearly see His mission (the Father’s purpose for Him).

5. He knew that His hour had not yet come and that He would not die in that storm.

6. When we have a clear perception of our identity in Jesus and of the Lord's purpose for our lives, we can also rest, even in the midst of a storm in life.

7. What should our spiritual identity be:

he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.

- Ephesians 1:20-21

And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus.

- Ephesians 2:6

Conclusion

1. Summary:

  • Fear can be overcome and anxiety can be surpassed.
  • The awareness of who Jesus is helps us overcome fear.
  • The awareness of who we are in Jesus enables us to overcome anxiety.

2. Main Statement:

  • When we have a consistent understanding of the life and work of the Lord Jesus, we become capable of facing with maturity the obstacles that arise in the storms of our lives.
