There are days when it seems like we are alone, in total silence, and we say to the Lord: "God, speak to me." Indeed, as children, we need to hear the voice of our heavenly Father guiding, teaching, comforting, and encouraging us.

God still desires to speak to His people today. In the past, He used prophets, and the Law, but now His own Son Jesus Christ has come to speak to His people and instruct them in His ways (Hebrews 1:1-2).

If you need to hear the voice of God, pay attention to His Word, this is a reliable and sufficient source of peace for your heart. Read, meditate, and pray. God will fill your heart with these truths.

1. Know that He says: 'Do not be afraid, I am with you'

God is not indifferent to what you have been through. He tells you not to fear and to trust Him above all. Believe despite the circumstances. The Lord Himself strengthens and sustains you day after day.

So do not fear, for I am with you;
do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Isaiah 41:10

Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the Lord. Jeremiah 1:8

Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the Lord.
Jeremiah 1:8

Do not be afraid, you worm Jacob,
little Israel, do not fear,
for I myself will help you,” declares the Lord,
your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.
Isaiah 41:14

Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
Luke 12:7

Do not be afraid, land of Judah;
be glad and rejoice.
Surely the Lord has done great things!
Joel 2:21

2. Wait with confidence

God responds to us according to His will, which is good, perfect, and pleasing (Romans 12:2). Sometimes the Lord's answer is favorable, other times not; sometimes He simply says: WAIT on me. This means resting, trusting in God's timing.

Wait for the Lord;
be strong and take heart
and wait for the Lord.
Psalm 27:14

There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens:
Ecclesiastes 3:1

But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.

The eyes of all look to you,
and you give them their food at the proper time.

I waited patiently for the Lord;
he turned to me and heard my cry.
Psalm 40:1

3. Be brave

The disappointments, traumas, and fears we face in life may have discouraged you. But remember: today and always, you have reasons to be courageous. Trusting in God's strength will sustain you and abolish your fears. In the face of new challenges, the Lord offers encouragement and gives you courage. Never forget: the Lord of the universe is with you, so be brave.

Be strong and take heart,
all you who hope in the Lord.

Joshua 1:7

4. Stay alert and stand firm in faith

"Hold firm, my child!" God is continually saying this to us... The Enemy is always ready to attack, like a fierce lion, wanting to destroy us, tempting us in our weakest points. In the Bible the Lord warns us: watch and pray, stay alert and be strong and courageous against any trap!

Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong.

5. Know that He says: 'I strengthen you'

When you think you can't handle it anymore, that you've given all you can, remember: God is the source of strength in your life. He strengthens you and renews your vigor, giving you a new breath each morning. Don't give up!

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.

whose hearts are set on pilgrimage.

they make it a place of springs;
the autumn rains also cover it with pools.
7 They go from strength to strength,
till each appears before God in Zion.
Psalm 84:5-7

But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded.”
2 Chronicles 15:7

6. Avoid evil

Evil manifests in various ways. But no matter how evil appears, God instructs us to forsake it every single time we see it. Sometimes it's external forces on us, such as unjust people, or actions that displease God. But often, evil also stems from within us (resentment, envy, lack of forgiveness). Distance yourself from anything that separates you from the Lord.

reject every kind of evil.
1 Thessalonians 5:22

Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,

But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.
1 Timothy 6:11

16 But to the wicked person, God says:

“What right have you to recite my laws
or take my covenant on your lips?
17 You hate my instruction
and cast my words behind you.
18 When you see a thief, you join with him;
you throw in your lot with adulterers.
19 You use your mouth for evil
and harness your tongue to deceit.
20 You sit and testify against your brother
and slander your own mother’s son.
21 When you did these things and I kept silent,
you thought I was exactly like you.
But I now arraign you
and set my accusations before you.

22 “Consider this, you who forget God,
or I will tear you to pieces, with no one to rescue you:
23 Those who sacrifice thank offerings honor me,
and to the blameless I will show my salvation.”

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
James 4:7

7. Call out to me

God speaks, but He also wants to listen to you. That's why He tells us: call, cry out, pray, simply talk to me, for I am attentive to those with sincere hearts. He responds to our cry and doesn't leave us without an answer.

‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.’ Jeremiah 33:3

‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.’

The best way to speak with God is through prayer. Through Jesus Christ, we receive this direct channel to the Father and can speak directly with Him wherever we are.

8. Come to Him with all your heart

all you ends of the earth;
for I am God, and there is no other.

And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.
Hebrews 11:6

9. Be in The 'Silence' of God

Sometimes we may feel like God isn't responding to us... but that doesn't mean he has forgotten about us, or that he has rejected us. Often these feelings of insecurity arise from a lack of intimacy with God. God is Sovereign and will choose to remain silent in certain situations.

However, we can be confident that He is by our side - in the silence - observing our behavior. In these times, it's important to practice what we've already heard from the Lord and put His Word into action. That's what He wants from us. An American pastor once said something that illustrates this idea:

"Never doubt in the dark what God told you in the light."
(att. V. Raymond Edman)

The silence of God can have many reasons, but almost always it serves to test our faith. Many believers, in the Bible and throughout history, have gone through moments when they have felt as though God was absent. But in the end, we understand that God is in control of all things.

10. Know that all things work together for good

It may seem strange that sad and painful experiences serve for something good, doesn't it? But that's what we learn in the Word of God. If we love God and are called according to His purpose, everything that happens to us is for our good.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
Romans 8:28

6 In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 7 These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith - of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire - may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.
1 Peter 1:6-7

See what God is saying to you today.

Speak Lord, for your servant is listening

Now, after reading and meditating on so many messages, take a moment for reflection. Are we prepared to hear the voice of God? If He speaks to us, will we recognize it?

If you've read this and you are facing overwhelming tasks and the busyness of your day, we invite you to re-read and meditate, setting aside some quiet time. Spend some time alone with God.

The Lord speaks to us, and this is something so awesome that it should be far more important than anything else in our day. Sit down, calm your heart, and prepare to hear the calm voice of God.

The Bible tells us that the voice of God is:

  • Gentle and soft - "After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper." (1 Kings 19:12)
  • Powerful - "As the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and the voice of God answered him." (Exodus 19:19)
  • Majestic - "And behold, the glory of the God of Israel was coming from the east. And the sound of his coming was like the sound of many waters, and the earth shone with his glory." (Ezekiel 43:2)
  • Feared by sinners - "And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden." (Genesis 3:8)
  • Directing us to Jesus Christ - "He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, 'This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.'" (Matthew 17:5)

Listening to the voice of God requires learning and intimacy with Him. We can only recognize the voice of someone we know, so we must seek to know God more.

My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. John 10:27

My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.
John 10:27

Every sheep recognizes the voice of its shepherd. Therefore, we must sharpen our ears to recognize the voice of the Lord. This maturity comes only through sanctification.

He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”
Luke 11:28

Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.
Romans 10:17

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
John 16:33

Has Jesus been speaking to your heart? Every time we seek God, we gain discernment to hear His voice and identify His signs. Everything He has conveyed was to give us life and peace. Yes, in Him you will have real peace and abundant life. In times of trouble, He says, "Take heart; I have overcome the world"... with me, you will overcome too!
