Angels are spiritual beings created by God. This means they are spirits and do not have a flesh-and-bone body like humans. However, the Bible mentions occasions when angels, being sent by God to fulfill a specific mission, appeared in human form.
The word "angel" comes from the Greek "ángelos," which means "messenger." Therefore, the primary role of angels is to deliver messages from God to humans that will bring them closer to Him and His will. This is explained in the Epistle to the Hebrews as follows:
Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?
- Hebrews 1:14
Not all angels are exactly the same; we find descriptions in the Bible that help us understand their categories and the functions they perform. Let’s look at some of the types of angels mentioned in the Bible.
Archangels: their description in the Bible
Archangel is a title that denotes authority. An archangel is a chief angel who holds the highest rank among angels. The Bible does not provide a physical description of archangels; it only indicates that they are angels with authority and a powerful voice. In fact, the only archangel mentioned by name in the Bible is the archangel Michael, implying that he is the leader of the angels.
We find an interesting and somewhat confusing passage in the book of Jude. We see the archangel Michael and the devil fighting for the body of Moses after his death, an event not mentioned anywhere else in the Bible.
The important point to emphasize is that Michael, even being the chief among angels, did not face the devil by his own strength or self-reliance. He did it in the power and authority of the Lord. This confirms Christ's lordship over all angelic beings, even those of the highest rank.
But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not himself dare to condemn him for slander but said, “The Lord rebuke you!"
- Jude 1:9
Another passage in which Michael is mentioned as the leader of angels is in chapter 12 of Revelation. There it is prophesied that a great battle will occur in heaven at the end of time. Michael will lead a group of angels in the battle against the devil and his angels, and they will defeat them.
7 Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. 8 But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven.
- Revelation 12:7-8
A passage that seems to strengthen the idea that archangels are beings with a very high level of authority is the one we find in 1 Thessalonians 4:16.
For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.
- 1 Thessalonians 4:16
In this verse, which also speaks about the end of times, we see that Jesus will return with a commanding voice or authority, the voice of an archangel. The verse does not say that Jesus is an archangel, but that his voice, like that of an archangel, has authority. Jesus will give orders, lead, and the will of the Father will be fulfilled.
Understand the truth about the end times mentioned in the book of Revelation.
Cherubim: their description in the Bible
Another group of spiritual beings mentioned in the Bible is the cherubim. The Bible gives us more detailed descriptions of them. We know that on the ends of the Ark of the Covenant in the tabernacle, the image of cherubim appears, so we can understand that the people of Israel were familiar with their appearance.
19 Make one cherub on one end and the second cherub on the other; make the cherubim of one piece with the cover, at the two ends. 20 The cherubim are to have their wings spread upward, overshadowing the cover with them. The cherubim are to face each other, looking toward the cover.
- Exodus 25:19-20
There are several verses in Ezekiel 10 that provide a fairly clear description of the cherubim. They are presented as impressive and beautiful beings, with wings, four faces, and full of eyes.
The sound of the wings of the cherubim could be heard as far away as the outer court, like the voice of God Almighty when He speaks.
- Ezekiel 10:5
Their entire bodies, including their backs, their hands and their wings, were completely full of eyes, as were their four wheels.
- Ezekiel 10:12
Each of the cherubim had four faces: One face was that of a cherub, the second the face of a human being, the third the face of a lion, and the fourth the face of an eagle.
- Ezekiel 10:14
The Bible also tells us that the angels God placed as guardians of the Garden of Eden after expelling Adam and Eve were cherubim.
After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.
- Genesis 3:24
And another detail about the cherubim: before becoming prideful and rebelling against God, Satan was a beautiful cherubim protector.
12 “Son of man, take up a lament concerning the king of Tyre and say to him: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: “‘You were the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. 13 You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone adorned you: carnelian, chrysolite and emerald, topaz, onyx and jasper, lapis lazuli, turquoise and beryl. Your settings and mountings were made of gold; on the day you were created they were prepared. 14 You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for so I ordained you. You were on the holy mount of God; you walked among the fiery stones. 15 You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created till wickedness was found in you. 16 Through your widespread trade you were filled with violence, and you sinned. So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God, and I expelled you, guardian cherub, from among the fiery stones. 17 Your heart became proud on account of your beauty, and you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendor. So I threw you to the earth; I made a spectacle of you before kings. 18 By your many sins and dishonest trade you have desecrated your sanctuaries. So I made a fire come out from you, and it consumed you, and I reduced you to ashes on the ground in the sight of all who were watching. 19 All the nations who knew you are appalled at you; you have come to a horrible end and will be no more.’”
- Ezekiel 28:12-19
Seraphim: Their Description in the Bible
The Bible mentions the seraphim only once, in the vision described by Isaiah in chapter 6 of the book that bears his name. There, their physical appearance and their function of continuous worship before the Lord are described.
The seraphim seem to have powerful voices that cause trembling. They use their voices to worship and proclaim the holiness of the Lord God Almighty. Another of their functions is to deliver a message from God to humans. In Isaiah 6, we see that one of the seraphim approached Isaiah, touched him, and spoke to him.
As for their physical appearance, the seraphim have six wings: two to cover their faces, two to cover their feet, and two to fly.
1 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. 3 And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.” 4 At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke. 5 “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.” 6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.”
- Isaiah 6:1-7
The Four Living Creatures: Their Description in the Bible
Two chapters in the Bible that recount visions describe four living creatures that are very bright and have an impressive appearance. These texts are found in Ezekiel 1 and Revelation 4. There, a fairly detailed description of these four beings is given.
The physical descriptions in these two texts vary. However, we can understand that they are four imposing beings who are around the throne of God, offering Him constant worship.
5 and in the fire was what looked like four living creatures. In appearance their form was human, 6 but each of them had four faces and four wings. 7 Their legs were straight; their feet were like those of a calf and gleamed like burnished bronze. 8 Under their wings on their four sides they had human hands. All four of them had faces and wings, 9 and the wings of one touched the wings of another. Each one went straight ahead; they did not turn as they moved. 10 Their faces looked like this: Each of the four had the face of a human being, and on the right side each had the face of a lion, and on the left the face of an ox; each also had the face of an eagle. 11 Such were their faces. They each had two wings spreading out upward, each wing touching that of the creature on either side; and each had two other wings covering its body. 12 Each one went straight ahead. Wherever the spirit would go, they would go, without turning as they went. 13 The appearance of the living creatures was like burning coals of fire or like torches. Fire moved back and forth among the creatures; it was bright, and lightning flashed out of it. 14 The creatures sped back and forth like flashes of lightning.
- Ezekiel 1:5-14
In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures, and they were covered with eyes, in front and in back. 7 The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle. 8 Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings. Day and night they never stop saying:
“‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty,’ who was, and is, and is to come.”
- Revelation 4:6b-8
Principalities, Powers, Thrones, and Authorities: Their Description in the Bible
The Bible also mentions other angels who hold a certain position of authority among angelic beings. Among other names, they are called principalities, authorities, and powers. Like all other angels, these were created by God and are under the orders and authority of the Lord Jesus Christ.
That power is the same as the mighty strength 20 he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, 21 far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.
- Ephesians 1:19b-21
For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.
- Colossians 1:16
9 For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, 10 and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority.
- Colossians 2:9-10
It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who has gone into heaven and is at God’s right hand - with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.
- 1 Peter 3:21b-22
The Only Two Angels Named in the Bible
Gabriel
The biblical appearances of Gabriel inspired much respect from those who witnessed them. It seems that his appearance is very imposing and evokes a certain fear. For example, when announcing the birth of their respective sons to Zechariah and Mary. Gabriel used the phrases "Do not be afraid, Zechariah" (Luke 1:13) and "Do not be afraid, Mary" (Luke 1:30) to reassure them. Daniel's description of his vision is more explicit:
As he came near the place where I was standing, I was terrified and fell prostrate. “Son of man,”he said to me, “understand that the vision concerns the time of the end.”
- Daniel 8:17
In the biblical texts, we see that Gabriel identifies himself by name, and although his appearance is imposing, it is also one that is attractive to human beings.
The angel said to him, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news.
- Luke 1:19
28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” 29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God.
- Luke 1:28-30

Michael
When the Bible speaks about Michael, it gives the impression that he is an angel of higher rank. In Daniel 10:13, he is called "one of the archangels" (or one of the chief princes). In Revelation, Michael is shown as the commander in the battle at the end of times.
But the prince of the Persian kingdom resisted me twenty-one days. Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, because I was detained there with the king of Persia.
- Daniel 10:13
20 So he said, “Do you know why I have come to you? Soon I will return to fight against the prince of Persia, and when I go, the prince of Greece will come; 21 but first I will tell you what is written in the Book of Truth. (No one supports me against them except Michael, your prince.
- Daniel 10:20-21
7 Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. 8 But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven.
- Revelation 12:7-8
