Why is 666 the number of the beast? The Bible does not give us a straightforward answer. Revelation 13:18 is the only passage in the Bible that talks about the number of the Beast. This number, or the name of the Beast, would be marked on the hand or forehead of all the worshipers of the Beast.

This calls for wisdom. Let the person who has insight calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man. That number is 666. - Revelation 13:18

- Revelation 13:18

The Beast is portrayed in the Bible as a terrible monster that will arise when the end is near.

The Bible does not explain what 666 means

Throughout history, many things and people have been identified as the Beast, and numerous calculations have been made to show their relation to the number 666. Emperors, dictators, countries, ideologies, barcodes, electronic chips... even the internet has been related to the number 666 by some people! Who is right?

The answer may not yet have been revealed, but we can know one thing for sure: 666 is associated with someone who is worshiped by many people as a god and who dominates much of the world. When this person is revealed, their name will be closely linked to the number 666.

The Lesson of the Mark of the Beast

We may not know the exact meaning of the number 666, but we can learn a valuable lesson from it: we should not worship other gods.

Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you life as your victor’s crown - Revelation 2:10

Being faithful to Jesus is not always easy. The account in Revelation speaks of persecution at all levels for those who do not worship the Beast - imprisonment, exclusion, death. Those who love Jesus may even face financial penalties. Worshiping other gods might seem like the most sensible decision, but it is a trap. In the end, idolatry leads to hell.

You do not need to identify the mark of the Beast to avoid it. Just avoid idolatry. If anything or anyone is becoming more important than God in your life, it is an idol. Always put God first, and you will be protected from the curse of the Beast.
